Cyprus Problem: Demetris Christofias - First talk with Turkish leader
President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said that his first meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on September 3, in the framework of direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, will be procedural and no discussions on the substance of various issues will be held. Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his return from Beijing, President Christofias said they would be entering substantive talks during their second meeting on September 11, noting that the first few meetings would deal with governance matters.
Replying to questions, President Christofias said "we are entering a very serious process and we must all be very careful, the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey."
Asked if the situation in Georgia was affecting developments in Cyprus, President Christofias said any conflict in the world certainly did not contribute to creating the preconditions for world peace and the solution of local or regional problems.
The process of unification is one that is eagerly watched by all parties, and will contribute to the well being of the island. It is anticipated that this could have a significant influence on major investments in Cyprus and the Cyprus property market.
